Disney Research has invented a new coloring Augmented reality application which lets kids see their coloring book characters on which they are drawing in 3D. The application takes it a step further by moving the coloring book characters as in the image below
This is possible as the augmented reality application is able to track and capture real time images from a smartphone device's/ tab's camera and then map the real time images into 3D deformable surface to create the 3D Character. The conversion from 2D to 3D takes place using real time deformable surface tracking method.
The application is still in its early stages and once finalised might be available for download.
The application takes another step into the amazing world of Augmented Reality. This app will transform and makes how kids and elders draw. It even have commercial application in design and architecture.
The application could also be modified and used as a Virtual reality application/app with the best VR Headsets/Low cost VR Headsets/Google Cardboard models giving a much more immersive experience of Virtual and augmented reality with these Virtual Reality Headsets.
